At the heart of the D8R is a robust Cat® 3406C DITA (Direct Injection, Turbocharged, Aftercooled) engine, which provides a reliable 226 kW (303 hp) of flywheel power . This power is channeled through a highly efficient powertrain featuring a power shift transmission and a unique differential steering system. Unlike conventional clutch-brake steering, differential steering maintains full power to both tracks during turns, allowing the machine to turn smoothly under heavy load, significantly improving maneuverability and cycle times .
The D8R is designed to move more material in less time. It can be equipped with the largest standard blade in its class, a 10.3 m³ (13.5 yd³) Semi-Universal (SU) blade, which enables it to move up to 13% more material per pass compared to previous models . The dozer's load-sensing hydraulics continuously adjust power for maximum efficiency, giving operators precise, responsive control over the blade and ripper attachments .
