    About Altec

Founded in 1929 as the Alabama Truck Equipment Company with the mission statement of “placing the customer first and viewing people as its greatest strength,” Altec originally started out selling utility bodies, front end loaders, and dump bodies. From there, the company expanded to add digger derricks and aerial lifts to its catalogue. It sells products to customers across North America and in more than 100 countries around the world.

Based in Birmingham, Alabama, Altec offers products and services for a wide range of industries, including utilities, telecommunications, and contracting, but it also specializes in boom truck cranes, knuckle boom cranes, bucket trucks, digger derricks, and wood chippers used for tree care. In fact, one of its business units, Altec Environmental Products, focuses specifically on brush and tree chippers, including control-feed and self-feed drum chippers and disc chippers.

    Altec Cranes & Bucket Trucks

Altec sells its own line of telescopic boom truck cranes and distributes Effer knuckle boom cranes exclusively in the United States. Its boom truck cranes include behind the cab, rear, swing-seat, track, and tractor-mounted units. They feature anywhere from three to six boom sections with boom lengths ranging from 53 to 152 feet (16 to 46 meters) and load ratings of between 18 and 45 tons (16 and 41 metric tons).

Effer knuckle boom cranes range from the light Effer 145 to the heavy Effer 955. Depending on the exact configuration, you can expect a maximum hydraulic outreach ranging from 21.25 to 76 ft (6.5 to 23.2 m) and maximum lift capacities of between 2.2 and 331 t (2 and 300 mt).

Altec’s bucket trucks, which it refers to as “aerial devices,” include non-overcenter, overcenter, telescopic, and telescopic articulating models. Its telescopic bucket trucks, for example, have platform heights ranging from 30.1 to 82.8 ft (9.2 to 25.2 m) and max reaches of between 22.7 and 62 ft (6.9 and 18.9 m). One example of a popular model is the AT37G. Depending on the configuration, it has a max reach of 28.3 ft (8.6 m) and a platform capacity of up to 400 pounds (181 kilograms).

    Altec Digger Derricks

Altec’s lineup of digger derricks includes backyard, standard and large distribution, and transmission units. They have sheave heights of between 37 and 105 ft (11 and 32 m), 10-ft (3-m) load ratings of between 3,800 and 49,650 lbs (1,724 and 22,521 kg), and digger reaches ranging from 19.5 to 45.3 ft (5.9 to 13.8 m). They feature either electric/hydraulic or fully hydraulic control systems.

The DM47B, for instance, has a maximum lifting capacity of 25,085 lbs (11,378 kg) and a capacity of 12,902 lbs (5,852 kg) at 10 ft. It also has a top sheave height of 46.4 ft (14.1 m) and a minimum and maximum digging radius of 17.9 and 26.7 ft (5.5 and 8.1 m), respectively. Standard features include an outrigger boom interlock system, back up alarm, five-function hydraulic overload protection system, and many others.

    Altec Wood Chippers

Altec also sells several wood chippers, all of which are towable units. They have chipping capacities of either 12 or 13 in. (305 or 330 mm) and feed rates of 95 or 111 ft (29 or 33.8 m) per minute, and the weight of the machines range from 4,295 to 5,580 lbs (1,948 to 2,531 kg). Standard features include Altec’s FeedSense Electronic Feed Control System, a height-adjustable chute with hand crank rotation, a low-profile hydraulic cylinder, and a Panic Bar that ensures operator safety.
