    About Chainsaws

Chainsaws are motorized, portable cutting tools typically used for cutting and trimming trees. They are most commonly used in the tree care, landscaping, and logging industries, where they are a vital part of every crew’s toolkit. However, you will also find them in use on construction jobsites and in various other industries where they may be used to cut concrete, ice, and other hard substances.

Most chainsaws are powered by gas, but corded and battery-powered electric chainsaws are also readily available.

The earliest chainsaws date back to the 18th century, when a chainsaw-like tool was invented for surgical procedures. It wouldn’t be until the late 1920s when Andreas Stihl patented the first electric chainsaw design, paving the way for today’s powerful gas and electric models.

    A Chainsaw’s Cutting Mechanism

A chainsaw consists of an engine, a guide bar, and a chain. Gas-powered engines usually have the highest power and torque, while electric-powered chainsaws can either be plugged into a standard outlet/extension cord or use a rechargeable battery. Innovations in battery-powered engines give you flexible mobility without the added expense and emissions of a gas-powered engine.

As their name suggests, guide bars connect to a chainsaw’s chain and guide it along its revolutions, which are driven by the engine. Guide bars can vary in length from 8 to 20 inches (20 to 51 centimeters) for most saws, although high-end logging or ice saws can be longer. Smaller bars are more maneuverable, making them a good fit for smaller, more precise cuts.

The chain consists of individual teeth that rotate around the bar and do the cutting. There are four chainsaw cutter styles: full chisel, semi-chisel, square chisel, and low profile. Full-chisel cutters have square-cornered teeth, making them very effective and the best for hardwood, but they are not very durable. Semi-chisel cutters’ rounded corners are more adaptable and safer and can handle cutting solid or frozen wood. The fastest cutting chain is the square chisel, making it a good option for professionals because it requires more precise filing and polishing. Low-profile cutters are the most popular type for first-time users because of their high quality and safety. Choosing the right chainsaw type is essential to ensure a safe environment and a reduced probability of kickback.

    Safety Features & Innovations

Manufacturers have continuously developed and updated features to improve users’ safety and efficiency. Chain brake systems, standard on many chainsaws, stop the chain from rotating in the event of sudden movements or kickbacks. Modern chainsaws also feature anti-vibration systems that reduce vibration to reduce fatigue. Automatic oiling systems are also found in modern chainsaws, prolonging the life of the chain and improving efficiency.

Chainsaws For Tree Care & Landscaping

Chainsaws are ideal tools for limbing, bucking, pruning, and cutting firewood, and some chainsaws have been designed especially for landscapers and tree care professionals. Models like the Husqvarna T535 and T540 feature a top handle to reach tight spaces comfortably. Specific pruning chainsaws, like the Stihl GTA26, have a narrow guide bar with a smaller chain to make precise cuts on branches and limbs.
