    About Wheel Mulchers

Wheel mulchers, sometimes referred to as “wheel brush cutters” or “wheel masticators,” use a mulching attachment or head to clear underbrush, trees, and other vegetation from various types of property. Wheel brush cutters shred grass, weeds, and small trees into mulch and distribute it on the ground for decomposition. Mulching also stabilizes the soil and protects it from erosion.

Dedicated wheel mulchers are often large, powerful, and durable machines based on a wheel loader or industrial tractor. They are equipped with a front-mounted disc-, deck-, or drum-style mulcher head and various shields and guards to protect the operator and machine from flying debris. Some wheel mulchers push through vegetation with a front-mounted bar, cutting foliage at the stem and then mulching it as the mulcher passes over it.

For smaller jobs, another wheeled machine, such as a farm tractor or skid steer, can also be fitted with a brush cutter attachment if the machine can support its weight and generate enough power take-off (PTO) horsepower or hydraulic flow and operating pressure to meet the mulching head’s demanding requirements.

    Wheel vs. Track Mulchers

Compared to mulchers on tracks, mulchers on wheels and tires are more agile both on and off the jobsite. Wheeled models, when paired with a fast mulching head, are especially known for their speed in cutting down large swaths of light brush on firm soil. Wheel brushcutters can also move across paved surfaces without undue wear.

However, the tracked carriers of track mulchers and excavator mulchers provide better traction on soft terrain and high grades. Track mulchers also exert less ground pressure and disrupt the soil less than wheel models, as their tracks spread their weight over a much larger contact patch than tires. Excavator-based models with a mulcher head on a boom can grind trees several feet off the ground and clear steep slopes. Skid-steer mulchers are compact options that may have either wheels or tracks and can work in narrow confines.

    Best Projects For Wheel Mulchers

Wheel masticators are well-suited for handling large land-clearing jobs to remove brush and vegetation above ground level. Models with a mulching drum head can also grind tree stumps under the surface. Brush clearing makes it easier for other machines to uproot stumps and remove large rocks from the soil.

Wheel mulchers are often used for:

    • Land clearing for commercial and residential construction
    • Vegetation management
    • Fire prevention
    • Utility right-of-way maintenance
    • Forestry
    • Land reclamation
    • Wildlife habitat restoration
    • Oil and gas pipeline projects
When you’re ready to buy a wheeled mulcher, look for a model that can handle the diameter of the tree trunks on your typical jobsite, such as 6 inches (150 millimeters) on the low end to 24 in (610 mm) on the high end. Other things to look for are the mulcher’s cutting width, its finish (how finely or coarsely it chops the vegetation), and how easy it is to replace or resharpen its cutting teeth.
