About Log Loaders

As the name suggests, log loaders excel at picking up fallen logs and large branches and loading them onto a trailer or truck for transport or feeding them into a tub grinder or horizontal grinder. Tree care companies can use log loaders to remove dead or damaged trees, pruned limbs, stumps, and storm debris, and help relocate mature trees for preservation or new development.

Landscaping contractors may use log loaders during lot-clearing operations and site preparation, as well as move heavy rocks, paving stones, and other hardscape materials. Both tree care and landscaping companies can use log-loading machines to move and spread materials such as mulch, wood chips, and soil.

Log Loader Booms & Grapples

Log loaders use a boom and a hydraulic grapple to grab onto large logs and move them into position. Boom and grapple types vary, resulting in different log loader types, including knuckle booms, cranes, forklifts, heel boom loaders, “butt-n-top” loaders, and others.

Some loaders and their grapples are designed to handle one log at a time, while others can carry multiple logs simultaneously. Depending on their grapple design, log loaders can also bunch and sort.

Various Types Of Log Loaders

In addition to the variety of boom and grapple styles, you’ll also find log loaders with different bases. The most common examples include track, trailer, wheel, truck, and stationary log loaders. Stationary and trailer-mounted log loaders must be moved into place and positioned adequately before they can be used.

Drivable alternatives—including tracked, wheeled, and truck-mounted log loaders—offer the mobility to get into tighter spaces. You can drive mobile log loaders into harder-to-reach places and transport logs wherever needed. Some log loader trucks have a flatbed and can load themselves, providing an all-in-one log transport solution.
